Dr. Beckenstein was born and raised in New York. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree, in Biology, from Union college in Schenectady, New York. In 1987, he received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. He was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.

He completed his internship and General Surgical training in 1992 at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey where he was awarded the Herbert Schulte Award for clinical excellence.
