All of these things are exactly what brought P. into our offices. “I had been curious about having breast augmentation for years. But when I finally got serious about it, I spent about six months finding out everything I could about the procedure and prospective surgeons.”

In preparation, P. watched online videos, read physician’s biographies, looked at before and after photos, and studied countless websites. “This is my body. I was taking this decision very seriously and finally narrowed my choice to three doctors that I visited for personal evaluations.”

La Jolla Breast Augmentation patient K. bubbles over with enthusiasm when asked her she feels about her cosmetic surgery procedure at La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre. You may find it hard to believe that someone could be so excited about breast augmentation surgery until you read K.’s story.

The youngest of family of petite woman with small chests, K. decided to have surgery to enhance her breasts.

The mother of two had to say this about her struggles with her breast size, “I thought that maybe something would change with pregnancy, but my breasts actually were smaller and practically just skin after the birth of my second child. Something inside just tells you when the time is right, and for me, I had waited long enough and was ready to explore getting breast implants.”

“While I was breastfeeding my youngest child, I came down with a really serious infection in my milk ducts. I went from doctor to doctor, being treated with a host of antibiotics to try and fight the bacterial infection. There reached a point where they brought in cosmetic surgeons to evaluate removing my implants until the infection healed.”

Four years ago, B. went on a journey to rediscover herself and her body. She began with gastic bypass surgery that led to an amazing 130 pound weight loss. Along with the great accomplishment, B. also experienced excess skin that most patients with dramatic weight loss experience, which also led to sagging breasts.

Her next step on her journey led her to a breast lift (mastopexy). “I asked friends for recommendations and turned to the Internet to research everything I could about breast lifts. C. knows what a struggle it is to lose weight. In 8th grade, just when life is beginning to throw so many challenges at you, she weighed 225 pounds and wore a size 22. “I’m a southern girl from Alabama and grew up loving food. When I was a teenager, I moved in with my grandparents and started to become aware of how unhealthy my weight was. My grandmother sent me to nutrition classes and I lost some weight.”

Yet like many people, C. went on a roller coaster of weight gain and loss for much of her life. Two unfortunate circumstances led C. in a different direction. “I was involved in a bad car accident, while at the same time my husband who is in the Marine Corps was deployed to Iraq. The stress of both of these situations just sort of kick started my weight loss, and then I took total control of staying on track.” C. decided the days of the deep-fried southern foods she loved so much had to take a back seat to her new goal of finally getting in shape, and keeping the weight off.

“I lost 60 pounds over two years and should have been feeling great about myself. Instead, the years of yo-yo dieting had left my body with lots of excess skin that I hated.” Knowing her weight loss was permanent this time, she decided to explore surgical options to eliminate the extra skin and give her a body she could be proud of.

Like many patients, C. thought she knew exactly what procedure she wanted to have—a tummy tuck and liposuction. She researched all the information on the internet and came across the LJCSC website. Dr. Brahme's Patient Testimonials

Kieu, married, and the mother of one son, fits the “Mommy Makeover” profile perfectly. She had excess skin on her tummy that no amount of working out could fix, “I exercise regularly and stay on top of my fitness, but I just couldn’t get rid of the loose skin.”

After thinking about surgery for almost five years, she decided to act. “I said, Why pay trainers? Why not use the money toward surgery?” Kieu’s “someday” thoughts turned into action, “It was time for me to look GOOD and feel comfortable in my own skin again. I wanted my old body back and to feel good in a bikini again.”

Kieu, a self-employed paralegal, knew she was going to do her research to find the right doctor. She had consults with ten plastic surgeons, “I did my homework and considered doctors from San Diego to Beverly Hills. I wanted to be in the best hands. I didn’t just want a plastic surgeon. I also wanted an office that was understanding and would support me through my surgery.”

As a part of her research, Kieu met Dr. Johan Brahme at La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre. Before her big move to San Diego, J. lived in New Jersey her entire life. As she matured, she noticed she had developed differently than any of the other girls she knew. “I don’t know if it is just the way I was built, but I have had sagging breasts from the time I began to develop.” A few things can cause breasts to lose shape, but J. experienced none of them.

“Every time I walked by a mirror, I was annoyed with the way my breasts looked. I was too young to have to be concerned with out of shape breasts.” A breast lift was always in the back of her mind, but she wanted to wait until she had children. “I remember that I woke up one morning and thought, I don’t want to wait any longer.”

J. started saving for the operation while she searched for the perfect surgeon. “I think I had at least 20 different consultations with plastic surgeons, exploring every possible scenario. I had certain qualities I was looking for in a surgeon, and a list of questions that I needed answered before I would ever commit to this surgery.” Most importantly, her doctor needed to be a board-certified plastic surgeon.

“After looking at before and after pictures, and hearing the answers from each doctor to my laundry list of questions, I realized several things. Overall, all of the physicians agreed I would need a breast lift with small implants to achieve the proper look. I also was aware of the scars that I would encounter with this type of procedure.” J. soon realized her decision came down to one important thing- a personal connection with her surgeon.

H. began gaining weight when she was 10 years old. Twenty years and two toddlers later, she decided to do something about it. “Something began to change for me after my daughter was born. Here I was, the mother of two beautiful children, and too heavy and out of shape to keep up with them. Even worse was the fear of not knowing if I would be around to watch them grow up. H. began living by the Weight Watchers motto of “Stop Dieting—Start Living,” and had lost a huge amount by the fall of 2009. She exercised regularly, but knew some areas of her body just weren’t going to bounce back. “I loved the way my body was shaping up but after breast-feeding two children, my breasts were almost beyond help, not to mention the excess skin around my stomach.” She began looking into plastic surgery and made several appointments, when one of her husband’s friends recommended Dr. Johan Brahme, board certified plastic surgeon at La Jolla Plastic Surgery Centre. “I went to your website to learn more about him and immediately felt drawn to him from his picture. Mothers and daughters have always shared a special bond. It’s as much about family dynamics and handed-down recipes as it is about shared experiences and perspectives. For K. and her mom B., that bond grew recently to include not only the choice of plastic surgery, but also the selection of the same plastic surgeon—Dr. Joseph L. Grzeskiewicz.

K. wanted a breast augmentation, and B. decided to finally get the facelift she’d been thinking about. “Dr. G,” as his patients fondly call him, was the perfect choice for this mother-daughter duo. However for La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre patient, J., her family history with breast cancer could have a huge impact on her decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery – little did J. know where her journey would take her.

J.’s search for a board certified surgeon began as many other searches begin, by turning to her family and friends. Her sister advised her to consult a friend who was a La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery employee. Despite a referral from a trusted family friend, J. began doing her own research.

Just five months after her breast augmentation surgery, the imaginable happened. J. was diagnosed with DCIS. The earliest form of breast cancer, DCIS treatment is non-invasive and usually not life threatening which was boon to J..

“Figuring out my options was tricky, because not only do I have a family history of breast cancer, I also have breast implants. The first surgeon I talked to immediately said I needed a bilateral mastectomy. That seemed too extreme. So I went to another surgeon, who told me about a special 5 day radiation treatment called SAVI.”

“I felt very lucky that I was a candidate for SAVI. My sister had a bilateral mastectomy, radiation and chemotherapy. I saw firsthand how difficult those treatments can be. Other than fatigue, I had no side effects during my treatment. The fact that I have augmented breasts and was able to successfully treat my breast cancer without damaging the implants was just so amazing to me. For such a negative situation, I feel like I had a very positive outcome.”

The support Dr. Grzeskiewicz and the LJCSC team is something J. was extremely impressed by and grateful to have during her treatment. She added, “Dr. G went out of his way to follow me after my diagnosis with appointments, emails and phone calls. I could not have asked for more sincere care and concern. The staff kept checking with me throughout my ordeal, especially Gudrun. She is caring, compassionate, and knowledgeable. There is not one person at LJCSC that has not made me feel like I am their most important patient. My care was extraordinary especially when I compare it to others I know who had the same procedure elsewhere.”

“I never thought I would have plastic surgery. It’s not that I’m opposed to it, I just always felt comfortable with my body the way it was.” T.’s felt that way for most of her life. She liked the way her smaller breasts complimented her petite body, even when all her friends were having their breasts augmented. However, when T. and her friend began an intense exercise regimen, her body changed in an unexpected way. “It was like my breasts started to deflate. It happened so quickly that it was really shocking.” Suddenly, her bras and clothes no longer fit her well.

She still didn’t consider plastic surgery, until her friend scheduled a joint consultation for them at La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre. “I really thought I would just go along with her for the experience. When it was time to pick the size of the breast implants, left the final decision in the hands of Dr. G. “I figured, this is what he does every day, so I totally trusted him to wait until we were in surgery, and let him choose the size he thought best fit my body.” She also met with an LJCSC patient coordinator, who educated her on all the financing options that were available. “When I was weighing my decision, I didn’t just look at the bottom line price. I knew I was paying for a really qualified surgeon and staff, and a very safe place to have surgery.”

After about a month, she weighed her options and decided to have the augmentation. “Even after I made the decision to have the surgery I was really nervous. My nerves turned to excitement once I had my pre-op appointment and had all of my concerns addressed.” Throughout their pre-op and follow-up appointments, they addressed all of her safety concerns and made her completely comfortable in her decision.

While some patients have some trouble adjusting to their new breast size, T. loved them instantly. “They were perfect and I was so happy that I made the decision to have the surgery. I made sure to follow every single post-op instruction to the last detail.” She felt better with every passing day and loved her new breasts even more.

Once thinking she would never consider plastic surgery, she now shares her experience with as many people as possible. “I just think people should realize that this is elective surgery so take the time to find the right surgeon and place to have your procedure. Turning 21 is our second step into adulthood. For L., it was a chance to fulfill a dream she had since she was in high school. Like most girls, she went through an awkward stage. She looked to her mother, who had raised her since her father had passed away when she was young, for advice and was confident that she would fill out over time.

“My mom had developed very early in life, when she was 13 years old, so I just figured I would catch up and my breasts would grow.” L. was always active as a teenager. She appeared confident on the outside, but was struggling with the fact that her breasts had yet to develop.

“As I got older, it definitely got harder. All of my girlfriends had great shapes and there I was trying to hide my flat chest any way that I could. It was exhausting.” She came to the decision that she would augment her breasts from surgery, and openly discussed it with her mother—like she did many things.

She had friends who had breast augmentations, and was recommended to meet with board certified surgeon, Dr. Joseph Grzeskiewicz at the La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre. “I’m the type of person that does extensive research before I embark on anything so I went to the LJCSC website and read about “Dr. G.” I loved everything I was reading, from his philosophy about patients, to his education, and of course, his before and after results.”

She saw two doctors before her appointment at LJCSC and was armed with many questions. “The minute I walked through the doors at LJCSC, I felt a sense of peacefulness. It’s absolutely beautiful but more than that, there is this ‘vibe’ you get that makes you feel like every patient matters. My mom came with me and Dr. G was so personable and kind, and truly acted as if I were the only patient that mattered to him. Nearly two years after her surgery, she says she is most excited when she wears sports bras with her new figure. I was never trying to be a sex symbol; I just wanted to feel more feminine and comfortable in my own skin. Mission accomplished: My confidence has skyrocketed!”

Some people don’t know what the right age is for a breast augmentation. L. says it all depends on the person. “I have always been mature beyond my years but I knew that this decision was 100% mine. I’d say you need to find a doctor like Dr. G that you feel totally comfortable with.”

From the time J. was a teenager, she was unhappy with her body. She felt she had a boyish figure being thin with a small chest “As I grew up, I never felt like I had a woman’s body and it bothered me all the time. I spent a lot of time trying to hide my body with loose clothing and padded bras and even found it hard to look at myself in the mirror.”

At first, J. was seeing a board certified dermatologist (Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick) at La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre for treatment of her skin. As she was visiting the centre one day, she saw information about the Plastic Surgery Division of LJCSC. “It was like something I had thought about for so long clicked and I was ready to see a plastic surgeon.” J. wanted to look into a breast augmentation.

J. made an appointment that day to see board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Grzeskiewicz, affectionately called “Dr. G.” “The minute I started meeting with Dr. G, I trusted him. I felt so comfortable sharing my feelings about my body image with him.”

“After Dr. G met with me, I had the chance to try on different implant sizes and I instantly felt different. They put so much time into helping patients choose the right size that you get to experience what you will look and feel like after surgery.” J. was ready for surgery, yet after deep consideration she decided on a rhinoplasty as well to get rid of a nagging bump on her nose. She was able to have both procedures completed at the same time.

J. never hesitated going through with the surgery. Even through her confidence, she met resistance from friends and family. “They kept telling me I was perfect the way I was and didn’t need anything. I realized that no matter what anyone else said or wanted, I knew it was the right choice for me.”

After surgery, J. explained, “It’s amazing the difference changing these two areas of my body has had on how I view myself. I love the way I look now and I’ve never felt like that before.”

Is there a “right age” to begin having plastic surgery? That’s something 26-year-old J. always wondered. Spending most of her youth and young adulthood playing sports, J. described herself as having a body that never made her feel very feminine. “I had this strong, athletic build combined with a very flat chest. I hated that.” J. recalls being in high school and imagining one day she would have a breast augmentation to make herself feel better about her body.

When J. turned 20, she set out to find a plastic surgeon to perform her breast augmentation. After three separate consultations, she decided not to have the surgery. “Having plastic surgery is so much more than just a physical act. You have to really be prepared mentally and I just knew my head wasn’t in the right place to proceed.”

Yet J. said as the years passed, she never lost the feeling of wanting to make some changes to her body. Just about that time, she saw some pictures of the work of La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre’s Dr. Joseph Grzeskiewicz (Dr. G), a board certified plastic surgeon. “I looked at the before and afters and knew I was ready. I met with Dr. G and found him to be so sensitive and attentive not only to my goals, but to my fears.” J. recalls having the opportunity to try on various implants during her consultation and really began to feel what a difference the surgery could make in her life.

“I guess it may be hard for some people to understand how a breast augmentation or any type of plastic surgery could be so life-changing. But when you are emotionally ready and are doing it for yourself, it’s an amazing feeling.” J. and Dr. G also discussed some areas of unwanted fat that had been bothering her and designed a plan to do liposuction of her thighs and stomach during the same surgery session. “I couldn’t believe I was finally going to get breast implants and have liposuction. On the morning of surgery, as Dr. G came in to greet J. and do her markings for liposuction, she developed an unexpected case of last minute fear and uncertainty about her breast augmentation. “I don’t know what happened. It was the one thing I had wanted for 10 years and suddenly I felt unsure.” Dr. G and the operating room team took the time to go over details with J. and then give her some alone time to think things through. “I will never forget that morning. There was no pressure and Dr. G was unbelievable. All he cared about was that I felt comfortable and good about my choice.”

J. chose to have the liposuction and breast augmentation and says it was the best decision she could have made. “The surgery didn’t just change my appearance, it changed how I felt inside. I have so much more confidence now and it has kept me motivated to stay on a healthy eating and exercise program. I don’t want to waste all that work!”

J. says she is forever grateful to Dr. G for his impressive surgical skills but more importantly, his devotion and care he gives his patients. “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t pass by a mirror and am still surprised that this body is really mine.”

There seems to be a point when the face or body in the mirror feels out of sync with inner feelings or desires. J. remembers experiencing those exact emotions. “I’m realistic. I wasn’t wanting to look 20 years younger, but I knew that my face wasn’t representing the real me.”

This year, K. became the bride she had always dreamed of being. While her mother discouraged her from revealing too much cleavage in her gown, K. was determined to pick a dress that accentuated her newly shaped body. Just two years ago, K. was so self-conscious of having small breasts that she avoided clothes that drew any attention to her chest. This became extremely difficult when her lifestyle with her boyfriend involved regular trips to the river, desert, and formal events. “I was either in a bathing suit or a formal gown, neither of which I felt comfortable being in.” Coming from a family of females with large breasts, K. just assumed they would one day grow.

G. had a facelift ten years ago. She enjoyed her more youthful look for many years, but time and gravity took their toll. She wanted a “refresher” but her doctor had retired. As luck would have it, she ran into her surgeon, Dr. Merrel Olesen at a duplicate bridge game. G. immediately asked Dr. Olesen what to do. We asked G. for advice to someone considering cosmetic surgery, “I would tell others that it’s a good idea to do it if you can afford it. There’s not too much pain and although, as with any surgery, there is risk, that’s a small chance. What you can gain is more self-confidence and a perk in your step since you feel better and more youthful. I’m definitely glad I did it and will come back if I need to.”

South African born S.’s life is never dull. While maintaining a web design business and sailing on the competitive circuit, she is also a single mom. In the last 15 years of living in the U.S., S. has developed a passion for sailing. She has done everything from LEMWOD to Newport to Ensenada (twice!) in the Long Beach Yacht club, an all-women’s match race on the Catalina 37s.

S. promised she would have cosmetic surgery done before her fiftieth birthday. When the time came, she kept her promise and decided on a facelift and breast augmentation. Choosing the right surgeon was of utmost importance to her.

“I did Hormone Replacement with Dr. Michael Roark in the past, and I really liked his style.” Even though S. was familiar with Dr. Roark, she did a lot of research before making a decision. “I had questions that were answered very well by Dr. Roark and his staff, and believe me, did a lot of research online. I looked at videos and got feedback from doctors and patients. I’m just the type of person who likes to know how things work. An incredibly important element of the surgical process is family support. S. was taken back when her former husband became her caregiver. He drove her to and from her surgery appointments even though he thought S. didn’t need any work done. She mentioned her former husband was very supportive and “impressed with [the] final results.”

The breast augmentation was so natural; S.’s son “didn’t even notice that [she] had a breast augmentation until someone mentioned it.” The 14 year old couldn’t understand why S. would spend the money to have facial surgery. “He thinks I look a lot better and happier because I don’t have the frown marks on my face.”

The most difficult part of the procedure for S. was following Dr. Roark’s orders to be less active while recovering. “I was a little put out that I couldn’t sail for 8 weeks. Although T. leads a very busy life, she always tries to find a little time each day to exercise. Her three children, two boys and one girl ranging in ages from 2½ to 7 years old, all have one thing in common—they were very large babies. “My first two children were 9.5 and 10 lbs. My third child had to be delivered by caesarean two weeks early because of how big my babies grew, and he was already 8 lbs.” The children brighten T.’s life in so many ways, but carrying such large babies wreaked havoc on her fit body. “The skin just kept stretching with each pregnancy, and no matter how much I worked out, it never bounced back.”

Feeling she was done with pregnancies, T. started exploring the idea of having a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to repair some of the after effects of carrying such large babies. “My body has never bothered me. I am a former gymnast, and even with all these big babies, my skin was perfect, except for the fact that it was loose.”

Set on getting her body back to its original shape, T. made an appointment with a plastic surgeon, and almost immediately booked her surgery. Yet something didn’t seem right to T.. “I kept having this nagging feeling that it wasn’t the best doctor or office for me. I felt so pressured to have the surgery, that I think I committed to it without really feeling comfortable with my decision.” So T. followed her intuition and cancelled her surgery, letting the thought of a tighter tummy rest for a while.

About a year later, T. was ready for one more try and to find the perfect surgeon for her. “All I really wanted was someone that was experienced, of course, but that listened to me and wasn’t just trying to sell me a procedure.” Not knowing where to go, she remembered that her good friend was a patient of Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick, a cosmetic dermatologist at LJCSC. “My friend spoke so highly of the doctor and the Centre, that I thought it was a perfect place to start my search for a plastic surgeon.”

Since T. had no experience with LJCSC, she asked for appointments with two of the Centre’s board certified plastic surgeons. Her first appointment was with Dr. H. T. wanted to lose her excess skin around her abdomen, but also cover up a hole left from a previous belly button ring. “I described to Dr. Roark how I wanted the skin pulled to accomplish both goals. He carefully listened to me, and then with his very gentle approach, showed me why the skin couldn’t stretch the way I wanted. While T. felt certain about her procedures, her husband was still a bit unsure. He thought she already looked perfect. He supported T.’s decision, but felt she should spend her first night following surgery in a professional after-care facility. T. wasn’t convinced. W. never had a strong feeling either way about plastic surgery until one night she was watching a movie with her husband and became interested in breast augmentation.
